La Sombra Eco-lodge really is a nature lover’s paradise. Situated just outside of Bosawas, the largest natural reserve in Central-America, guests of the lodge really get a chance to unwind and feel disconnected.
The lodge itself is three-stories and bears resemblance to mountain Hüttes commonly found in the European Alps. Hammocks line the balcony, providing a great spot to view the mist covered forest and relax to the sounds of nature. At night, temperatures tend to decrease quite a bit making a bonfire a great way to end the night.
Guests have the opportunity to take guided hikes through the coffee plantation, forest, and waterfalls surrounding the eco-lodge. The lodge also produces its own coffee, and coffee tours can be arranged for those who are interested in learning more about the coffee production process. All meals are prepared by the staff at the time you prefer to eat and the hospitality is very genuine. Enjoy!

- Hotel Finca Esperanza Verde -

Finca Esperanza Verde is an extremely successful community-based eco-lodge is the perfect place for those who are interested in exploring the natural environment and learning about local culture. Located at an elevation of 1,200 meters in the forested mountains outside of Matagalpa, guests can enjoy the cool climate, breathtaking views, and cultural activities organized by the lodge. The surrounding forest provides a great place for visitors to hike. Be on the lookout for howler monkeys, sloths, butterflies and over 150 species of birds. There is also a butterfly house, trails leading to waterfalls, and horseback riding. Educational opportunities are endless at the farm. Visitors can pick and harvest coffee (December – February), learn the art of cooking in a traditional Nicaraguan kitchen, explore the uses of herbal medicine, or take a jewelry class using local seeds.
Lodging is provided in beautiful cabins made of handmade brick and other local materials. All rooms are equipped with solar powered electricity, certified mountain spring water, and private baths. A new hot shower house is located behind the lodge and is available to all guests. All meals are served family style. Finca Esperanza Verde chefs create tasty meals using fresh organic fruits and vegetables and other locally grown items. The Finca purchases milk, eggs, poultry, honey, papayas, and homemade bread from their immediate neighbors.

Hotel Selva Negra is a Bavarian-style mountain resort situated in the mountainous region of Matagalpa on a sustainable coffee plantation. The hotel has been in operation for over twenty years and is attended to by fourth generation descendents of the original German settlers who brought the coffee trade to Nicaragua. Through the Kuhl’s dedication to sound environmental practices, everything from the food on the table to the electricity that lights the cabins is produced on-site. Numerous trails, many of which are designed for horses, make it easy to explore the beautiful and pristine cloud forest where many howler monkeys, deer, sloth, and a variety of birds make their home.
Selva Negra offers its visitors many unique experiences. Ambitious guests can take advantage of the various hikes (ranging in difficulty) around the property, while the more relaxed sip on a cup of coffee and enjoy their favorite book. The resort offers various types of lodging, including chalets, bungalows, double rooms, and a dormitory. The restaurant, within easy reach of all the bungalows and chalets, is located on one of the resort’s small lakes overlooking the mountains. La Cumplida is a privately owned farm that focuses on coffee production, reforestation programs, and helping to improve the local economy and rural life. In recent years, the farm has diversified its production and now includes medicinal plants, spices, and aromatic plants for the production of perfumes. In addition, the farm also operates a primary school with 160 students. The area is home to very diverse flora and fauna.
Located in the highlands of Matagalpa’s mountainous region, Casa Hacienda La Cumplida is the renovated main house of the working coffee plantation. The hotel provides comfortable accommodations and is ideal for those who are looking for an authentic experience and are interested in learning about Nicaragua’s coffee production, reforestation, environmental protection, and healthcare development programs.
Within walking distance from the coffee fields and hiking trails, the main house offers five basic but comfortable rooms; several with private bathroom facilities. In addition guests have access to internet and telephone services. A small restaurant located within the house serves local meals.
