One of the biggest sweet water lakes in the world harbors Isla de Ometepe. The island is land marked by two of the highest volcanoes of Nicaragua, each with its own typical climate and vegetation, due to the fact that Volcano Concepcion is still active and Volcano Maderas is no longer active. Volcano Conception has a dry climate and the soil does not support a lot of vegetation, meanwhile Maderas is covered with dense rainforest and tropical vegetation.
Program during your stay
The itinerary of your stay is as follows:
Day 1 Transfer to Ometepe, island tour, overnight on Ometepe Island.
In the morning you will be transferred to the island of Ometepe; the last part (by boat) you can enjoy the views over the lake and on both volcanoes of Ometepe. After arrival, you will start a short island tour visiting Charco Verde and Playa Santo Domingo.
Day 2 Climbing Maderas volcano, overnight on Ometepe Island.
A local guide will take you to the Maderas, the most tropical of both volcanoes. At Finca Magdalena you will first admire several petroglyphs (ancient drawings in rocks), before starting the climb to the top at almost 1,400 metres. The hike will take at least 6 hours (up and down) and you will need several litres of water.
Day 3 Relax / optional touring, overnight on Ometepe Island.
Today you can do whatever you want: just relax and stay at the beach, visit some of the small towns or some more hiking, for example to the San Ramon waterfall on the southern slope of the Maderas Volcano or, for real die-hards, up the other volcano, the Concepción.
Day 4 Masaya market, transfer to Managua, overnight in Managua.
Today you will leave Ometepe behind you. Before heading back to Managua, however, you will make a stop at the Masaya handicrafts market, a great opportunity for buying souvenirs for friends and family. Here you can find all kinds of typical Nicaraguan folkloristic products, such as hammocks, paintings and fine ceramics.
