Managua | 21 Jun, 2018

Besides its numerous breathtaking destinations, Nicaragua offers a wide selection of gastronomy tours in every region of the country. Vapues Tours allows you to discover different flavors, tastes and aromas of our most distinguished dishes, through local- and community based activities.

We invite you to experience signature activities in the Pacific and highlands of Nicaragua, all related to gastronomy. These experiences are child friendly and are great ´ingredients´ for family tours.

Granada - A chocolate workshop:
Learn about cacao and the chocolate making process. This workshop covers the entire process, starting from the cocoa bean and ending with a handmade bar of chocolate. Cocoa-based beverages are also covered in the workshop, including how to prepare an ancient Mayan drink. Learn about our cultural heritage in a very positive and joyful way, all with the promise of delicious chocolate to wrap up the tour.

Granada - Cooking class and local market:
Prepare your very own masterpieces on this culinary tour! Alongside a local culinary expert, you will first visit the local market in Granada to find and purchase fresh ingredients. Explore the marketplace and gain insight into the rich tradition of Nicaraguan cuisine at this colorful bazaar. Afterwards, you will be introduced to an expert local chef who will provide a hands-on comprehensive cooking demonstration, sharing techniques and methods to ensure you will able to prepare incredible Nicaraguan dishes including Indio Viejo and Vigorón. For your added comfort, an English-speaking translator will also be on hand to ensure nothing is lost in translation. To conclude this culinary tour, you will have the chance to enjoy your creations, complimented by a glass of wine. You will also receive a small gift, along with written recipes of the dishes you have learned to prepare for use back home.

Granada - Mombacho Volcano coffee estate tour:
A real treat for coffee lovers, on this tour you'll visit a coffee plantation and estate nestled on the picturesque slopes of a dormant volcano within the Mombacho Volcano Nature Reserve. Here you'll learn about sustainable coffee cultivation and at the end of the tour enjoy a coffee tasting at the Hacienda. Note that although this tour can be done the whole year round, from November to February is the harvest season. During these months, you can see how the beans are picked, washed, peeled and dried. You can also help choose the berries using a basket strapped around your waist.

León - San Jacinto mudfields & tortilla workshop:
This ‘out of the world' experience involves a visit to a volcanic field with boiling mud pods heated by the nearby volcanoes. Continue to a local home to participate in a local tortilla-making workshop; where you'll learn to make this traditional staple food on a wood stove. Once they have cooled, you'll get the chance to taste the freshest Nicaraguan tortilla of your trip.

3 reasons why Nicaragua is the perfect destination of 2018

Managua | 05 Feb, 2018

Nicaragua shares borders with Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica, nestled in the heart of Central America and ringed by both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Lately we are experiencing a steady development of the tourism for all the  right reasons:

1. Private Islands in the Caribbean Sea: an exclusive retreat at Calala Island, the first five-star resort in the breathtaking Caribbean of Nicaragua. Perfect spot for couples that prefer remote destinations with emblematic barefoot-luxury beachfront suites, creative fine dining experiences, and never-ending cocktail drinks.

2. Cloud forests and volcanoes, why not 2 in 1?
Nicaragua boasts 71 protected nature reserves, including tropical dry forests, rainforest, cloud forest, volcanoes, wetlands, mountains, and national parks. These areas are home to various wildlife species: birds, fish, mammals, and reptiles. Clients discover volcanoes with unique ecosystems, in some cases with primary cloud forest, like Mombacho Volcano near Granada and Maderas Volcano on Ometepe Island.

If you prefer to visit an active volcano and see lava and volcanic rock formations, in a tropical dry forest environment, Masaya Volcano is a must do! The main crater of this volcano is best known as 'the mouth of hell'. Here you can actually witness the bubbling lava lake.

For an extreme sports experience on a volcano, we suggest Cerro Negro; an imposing black hill and officially the youngest active volcano in the country. Under guidance of our instructor, clients can Volcano Board from the summit of the volcano, all the way to its base, where clients will be met with a refreshing drink.

3. Captivating land: Nicaragua has exquisite cultural variety that can be appreciated all over the country, often against a backdrop of colonial buildings with bright colors, during religious- and cultural festivities, and in vibrant rural communities. Experience surprising dishes with exotic ingredients, naive painting and poetry, colorful contemporary art, and not to forget the many murals, mostly displayed in parks, on monuments and walls; often unique artistic expressions that keep historic memories alive.

Vapues Tours Sustainability Field Trip

Morgan's Rock | 31 Oct, 2016

Last weekend the Vapues Tours team had their annual field trip, as a means of saying "thank you" to all employees, but also to get to know destinations and hotels in detail.

This year the trip was all about sustainable tourism, from two different points of view. First we went to Charco Muerto, a community of farmers and fishermen on the lakeside of Mombacho volcano. Here the team assisted in painting the school, with help of local community members. The night was spent in the community, which meant back to basic as there is no running water and limited electricity.

Vapues Tours is passionate about sustainability and community-based tourism, and staying in Charco Muerto was a wonderful experience. It offers a chance to see a different side of Nicaragua, a side that appears in no tourist folder, but that has so much beauty, and it is such a pity that so few people know of it. The environment is incredibly serene and beautiful, the people are very friendly and in harmony with nature. We welcome anyone who wishes to visit this or other communities in the rural parts of Nicaragua.

The second day the team traveled to San Juan del Sur, one of Nicaragua's top destinations, where a hearty lunch was enjoyed in Restaurant El Timón. We continued our way to the ecolodge Morgan's Rock- in appearance and terms of comfort a contrast to Charco Muerto, but remarkably similar in terms of their sustainable philosophy.

Here Vapues tours helped a reforestation project by planting mango trees, that should provide food for, among others, the three monkey species that live in the reserve. After an inspiring presentation on the importance of sustainable tourism by our sustainability expert, we had a good night's rest in Morgan's Rock's beautiful treehouses. Next morning it was time to return home, a lot the wiser.

Thank you to our hosts in Charco Muerto, Morgan's Rock and El Timón, and to all participants of this wonderful trip!
